Dr. Javier Gutierrez is a faculty member in the School of Education & Leadership and Program Director of Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK's Doctorate in Education, a program he knows from the inside, having completed his own EdD here with a dissertation tracing the pathway of a Latino man to senior housing leadership. He came to this role with nearly two decades of progressive experience in student affairs, most recently as Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Macalester College. He has worked at the intersection of student development, equity, and institutional change. That history of building communities, navigating systems, and advocating for students who are often unseen shapes everything he brings to the classroom and to his scholarship.

He teaches a variety of courses in HSEL, including Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Master's Capstone Design, and his scholarly interests center on autoethnography as a methodology for examining power, disrupting systems, and centering the stories that institutional data alone cannot tell. His writing has appeared in Perspectives Magazine (Upper Midwest Region – ACUHO), exploring themes of professional identity, social justice, and vocation. Beyond the classroom, Javier is a long-time advocate and community builder — advising student organizations, serving on equity and diversity committees, and mentoring others across the Student Affairs and EdD communities. He has served on the boards of PFund and the ACUHO-I Foundation, is currently a Board Director for the Listening House of St. Paul, and has partnered with The Sennah Foundation and CLUES.
